YouTube Tests AI “Ask YouTube” Previews in Desktop Search

YouTube is testing AI “Ask YouTube” previews in U.S. desktop search, placing text advice and timestamped video moments above standard results.

The feature is running for select signed-in desktop users in the U.S. who search in English, according to YouTube’s announcement. When users enter open-ended, how-to or skill-based queries, such as “how do I get marks off painted walls?”, YouTube may surface a conversational overview at the very top of the page instead of presenting only a traditional vertical list of video results. The test puts AI-generated summaries front and center before users click on a video result.

The structured AI cards combine text advice with timestamped key moments from relevant videos. Users can ask follow-up questions or skip to standard video results. The test expands Google’s push to integrate generative AI across its video platform, following the rollout of Ask YouTube on mobile.

Android Authority said the feature could transform YouTube into an interactive answer engine. It also raises concerns about creator traffic and monetization if viewers no longer need to click through to full videos.
