YouTube Tests Desktop Redesign That Moves Comments to a Sidebar, Viewers Push Back
YouTube is testing a desktop layout that moves comments and video details into a right-hand sidebar and puts large recommendation thumbnails below the player, drawing complaints from viewers.
In the new view, the main video player sits beside a vertical panel that holds comments, the video description and interactive tabs. Underneath the player is a grid of large recommendation thumbnails. Viewers who have received the layout describe a cramped watch experience, saying the video window is significantly smaller and the desktop viewport noticeably more cluttered than the interface they are used to.
The arrangement resembles earlier YouTube experiments in which comments were moved to the side of the player. Accounts posted on Reddit show multiple users encountering the shift without warning. Some of them have turned to custom uBlock Origin filters and browser extensions to restore the traditional YouTube video player interface, Android Authority reported.
Google has tried a comparable sidebar setup before. The company tested a similar layout in 2024 and then rolled it back amid backlash from users. It remains to be seen whether the current test will become a permanent part of the desktop interface or be withdrawn as well.
