YouTube to Expand Custom Feeds for Prompt-Based Recommendation Streams

YouTube expands Custom Feeds, letting US users build multiple prompt-based recommendation streams on mobile, web, and TVs.

Custom Feeds will let viewers save multiple feeds for different interests, moods, or routines. YouTube will keep those feeds updated with fresh recommendations, Android Authority reported. The goal is to give users a more direct way to shape recommendations instead of relying only on a single Home feed shaped by watch history.

The announcement follows an earlier test in which YouTube let some users tell an AI chatbot what they actually wanted to see. That test added a 'Your Custom Feed' chip beside Home for select users. Users could prompt YouTube to adjust what appeared there, essentially correcting the recommendation algorithm instead of waiting for their watch history to do the job.

The test addressed a common complaint about YouTube's Home tab. Android Authority noted that the Home tab has had a way of overreacting: watch one random woodworking video, and the algorithm can decide the user has found a new life's calling. Custom Feeds are intended to separate short-lived interests from the recommendations a viewer wants to see regularly.

YouTube has now officially announced Custom Feeds, moving the experiment beyond a limited test. The company said the feature is coming soon, without specifying an exact launch date in the source.

In the earlier test, the main interaction was a conversational prompt. Users could describe what they wanted to see, and the system adjusted the custom feed accordingly. The full feature will let users maintain several such feeds at once, each tied to a different purpose, such as an interest, a routine, or a mood.

Custom Feeds will be available across mobile, web, and TVs in the US. YouTube will keep each saved feed supplied with new recommendations, according to Android Authority. The company frames the feature as a way to give viewers more control over what shows up on their Home feed.
