Z.ai Confirms It Is Behind Mysterious Ox Alpha AI Model

Z.ai revealed that the anonymous Ox Alpha model on OpenRouter is its new GLM-series reasoning model, with weights to be released Wednesday.

Z.ai describes Ox Alpha as "a reasoning model designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workloads," suited for long-horizon software engineering, complex reasoning, and workflows combining text with visual context. The release intensifies competitive pressure from low-cost, high-performance Chinese models against expensive frontier labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

Earlier this month, Z.ai released GLM-5.3, which rivals Anthropic's Fable 5 on certain benchmarks. TechCrunch has reached out to Z.ai for additional comment.
