ZDNET compares Garmin Forerunner 170 and Coros Pace 4: sub-$300 sports watches with distinct strengths

ZDNET tested the Garmin Forerunner 170 and Coros Pace 4, both under $300, finding excellent lightweight design, week-long battery life, and different strengths in buttons and GPS.

The watches were tested by a ZDNET editor over several weeks of biking, walking, hiking, and rowing. Both have AMOLED displays, heart rate sensors, companion apps, and advanced training metrics. Unlike typical smartwatches, they require charging only about once a week and offer full web access to user data.

The Garmin Forerunner 170 features a traditional five-button layout, allowing navigation without a touchscreen, which is useful in rain or heavy sweat. Its buttons can be customized for quick access to activities. It also supports Garmin Pay and integrates with the broader Garmin ecosystem, including chest straps and bike computers. The Connect IQ store offers thousands of apps and watch faces.

The Coros Pace 4, meanwhile, has dual-frequency GNSS and supports five global satellite systems, providing more accurate location tracking in challenging environments like trees and buildings. Coros regularly updates location accuracy through its app.

The reviewer noted that while both watches were too small for long-term wear on larger wrists, they offer compelling options for athletes with smaller wrists.
