Apple Acknowledges iPhone Duo Inner Display Issue, Offers AppleCare Replacements
Apple says small number of iPhone Duo units have inner display issue and tells affected owners to contact AppleCare.
In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple said it was “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units.” The company said early response to the iPhone Duo had been “incredibly positive” and that developers were rapidly updating apps to take advantage of its “unique form factor.” Apple added: “If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”
9to5Mac reported that Apple says the problem affects a very small number of units and appears to surface relatively quickly. The Verge reported that affected devices often showed a bright line running from the center to the right side of the inner display. According to The Verge, users described the hinge tightening before the screen cracked when the device was opened. One user in Australia said an Apple Store replaced their unit “on the spot,” The Verge reported.
The Verge also reported that iFixit published a teardown of the phone over the weekend and offered its view on why some phones might be cracking. At the area where damage has occurred, iFixit showed how the foldable screen might be pushing against a center bar, according to the report.
Apple provided its statement to 9to5Mac and Bloomberg, according to The Verge. The Verge said it had contacted Apple about the reports but had not received an on-the-record response about the issues with the new phones. Apple’s statement to 9to5Mac and Bloomberg addressed the display problem.
The iPhone Duo is among the first devices to launch after John Ternus took over as CEO from Tim Cook, The Verge reported. The reports of cracked inner displays began shortly after launch, according to The Verge.
