Apple releases 27.2 updates, addresses iPhone Duo screen cracks

Apple's 27.2 updates add Siri AI and iPhone Duo Pencil support; Apple confirms cracks on a small number of Duo screens.

Apple confirmed the iPhone Duo display issue after the $1,999-and-up device went on sale Friday to long lines and pre-order waits. "We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units," an Apple representative told CNBC. "If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement." Apple says an out-of-warranty inner-screen repair costs $999, CNBC reported. CNBC said most reports came from anonymous users on Reddit and X and that some fake images were also circulating. Android Authority reported that some buyers saw cracked displays within hours of unboxing and that one owner heard a crack after fewer than 20 unfolds, though Apple reportedly replaced that unit immediately. Apple has not explained the cause or whether it will change manufacturing.

iFixit said in a teardown video that the hinge is shaped differently where the damage is occurring, and CEO Kyle Wiens wrote on X that a manufacturing variance or a grain of sand can kill the fragile display panel it protects, CNBC reported. Android Authority cited iFixit's finding of a potential stress point in the hinge and said JerryRigEverything's bend test left the inner display with permanent green lines; the exact cause remains unknown. The early failures are awkward for Apple because CEO John Ternus recently described some early Android foldables as "kind of cheap and crappy" in a TIME interview, and Samsung has already mocked the iPhone Duo, Android Authority reported. Early reviewers praised the unfolded experience for multitasking and media but said many apps had not been updated for the larger, wider screen; Apple said developers are rapidly updating their apps.

On the software side, iOS 27.2 brings Apple Pencil support to the iPhone Duo, which has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer screen, The Verge reported. The update supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) only, not Apple Pencil Pro or other models, according to 9to5Mac. iOS 27.2 also adds Edge Light for video calls and expands Dual Capture to group FaceTime calls, letting users show views from the front and rear cameras at the same time, The Verge reported.

Siri AI gains conversation recall, the ability to draw on photos in Messages, Calendar event attendees, voicemails and better Safari history and Reading List results, an Excluded Apps setting, granular text selection and support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, according to 9to5Mac. Those Siri AI features are available on all iPhone 16 models and later, plus the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max; Siri AI is not available in the EU or mainland China, 9to5Mac reported. iOS 27.2 also adds Suggestions in Messages, caption and comment editing in Shared Albums, support for Google's SynthID watermarking in Photos and Image Playground, separate New Episodes and Continue Playing sections in Podcasts, profiles in the Apple TV app and a sign-language interpreter or live captioner option in FaceTime.

HomePod 27.2 adds Sound Glow, which makes the top of the speaker glow and pulse with music, plus Lock Controls to disable top touch controls, Mac speaker output for Macs with Wi-Fi 6E or later and support for a four-speaker surround-sound setup with Apple TV 4K (4th gen), according to 9to5Mac. The surround-sound feature is coming November 13 and works with HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini 2; users can mix large and small HomePods as long as the front and rear pairs match. The Home app also adds Lock After Closing and Door Left Open options for compatible smart locks, 9to5Mac reported.

tvOS 27.2 adds new profile characters, a screen-saver shuffle option, ASL and BSL support for select Apple TV app content and a new Apple Music icon, 9to5Mac reported. Siri AI is also coming to Apple TV 4K (2nd gen) and later, and the 4th-gen Apple TV 4K will exclusively support the four-HomePod surround feature. macOS 27.2 Golden Gate expands Siri AI to the five new languages, adds gesture-recognition tools in built-in apps and includes a new Apple Music icon, 9to5Mac reported; the update also appears to fix a beta bug that caused windows in Electron-based apps to stop responding to dragging. Apple released watchOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 alongside the other updates, Engadget reported.
