BYD's Yangwang 'Project Hu' luxury EV tipped to debut solid-state battery in Dubai
BYD's Yangwang brand will unveil a Rolls-Royce-rivalling electric sedan, codenamed Project Hu, in Dubai in November, with reports linking it to solid-state batteries and a quad-motor setup.
Yangwang general manager Hu Xiaoqing published photographs of the heavily camouflaged car earlier this month, and videos posted by the Chinese account ThinkerCar X indicated it was undergoing final testing, according to TechRadar. The images show a long, high-riding sedan with rear-hinged coach doors, a layout intended to ease entry and exit.
CarNewsChina reported that the vehicle is expected to measure about 5.5 meters in length, putting it in the same class as the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and the Huawei/JAC-built Maextro S800.
BYD has not confirmed the powertrain. Speculation points to Yangwang's quad-motor architecture and DiSus active suspension, and teaser images show the car alongside BYD's Flash Charge technology, suggesting rapid charging capability.
In a recent interview, BYD executive vice president Stella Li said the company's first vehicle to use solid-state batteries would debut in 2027, a timeline that coincides with suggested launch dates for Project Hu. Electrek reported that prices for the model are rumored to start around 2 million yuan, equivalent to roughly $300,000, a level that would help offset the cost of solid-state batteries before mass production.
CarNewsChina reported that Yangwang already sells its U8 premium SUV in the Middle East for 659,900 dirhams, about $180,000, undercutting models such as the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Unveiling Project Hu in Dubai would signal that BYD believes its products can compete with established luxury badges in that market.
Chinese automakers have expanded quickly in the Gulf states, where high margins and strong demand for large SUVs have drawn brands including BYD and others. Western luxury manufacturers have so far faced limited direct competition in the segment.
