OpenAI Adds iCloud Mail and Calendar Plugins to ChatGPT

OpenAI adds iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins to ChatGPT for email search and event updates on web, desktop and iOS.

To use the plugins, users must log in with an Apple account and create an app-specific password, Engadget reported. Once enabled, the integrations work on desktop, the web and iOS, whether the user has a free ChatGPT account or a paid subscription. Subscribers to OpenAI’s Pro plan can also have Dot, the company’s AI agent, use either plugin.

ChatGPT said in a post on X that the iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins are available on all ChatGPT plans on web, desktop and iOS. The post described the plugins as “Much requested, and now yours to connect” and listed tasks including finding an email, catching up on an inbox, checking what’s next and updating a calendar event.

The plugins are separate from letting ChatGPT interact directly with Apple’s Mail and Calendar apps on macOS, according to Engadget. Those apps can display inboxes and calendars from third-party services such as Outlook or Gmail. The iCloud plugins give ChatGPT access only to messages and calendar events associated with Apple’s services, so they are useless to people who do not use iCloud.

The release comes during a complicated relationship between OpenAI and Apple. ChatGPT was the first AI assistant to be directly integrated with Siri, Engadget reported. Apple’s decision to work with Google rather than OpenAI to revamp its AI models was the first suggestion that the relationship had soured, and Apple’s July lawsuit alleging OpenAI employees stole its trade secrets furthered that impression, according to the report.

Yet Apple also announced Creator Studio updates alongside the new M6 iMac and MacBook Pro that include a new chatbot experience in Pages, Numbers and Keynote partially powered by OpenAI models, Engadget reported. Neither company seems willing or able to fully walk away from the other, the report said.

Editor's Summary OpenAI has added iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar plugins to ChatGPT, extending its email and calendar controls to Apple services. The plugins work across web, desktop and iOS on all ChatGPT plans, while the Pro plan's Dot agent can also use them. The launch comes amid a mixed OpenAI-Apple relationship that includes Siri integration, a trade-secrets lawsuit and new Apple productivity features partly powered by OpenAI models.
