Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra firmware update addresses reboot and display bugs
Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra firmware update fixes screen flickering, slow reboots, and unexpected restarts.
The update also includes unspecified additional bug fixes and general performance improvements, Microsoft said. The issues were present at launch, and Tom Warren of The Verge noted in his review that rebooting the device was "surprisingly slow" and that moving a window rapidly sometimes left a trail. He also encountered speaker interference loud enough to sound like firecrackers, which resolved after rebooting but recurred a couple of times. The Verge has asked Microsoft whether that issue is among the additional fixes.
Microsoft said users "may be required" to take extra steps after installing the firmware. "We recommend that you restart your Surface to complete any remaining part of the installation. To restart your device, select Start, and then select Power > Restart," the company said.
The firmware update will be delivered to all Surface Laptop Ultra devices, but not every device will receive it at the same time. Users can manually install the update by following instructions on Microsoft's driver and firmware page. The firmware update cannot be uninstalled or reverted to an earlier version.
