Apple Adds Selfie-Based Age Verification in iOS 27.2
Apple’s iOS 27.2 adds a selfie-based age-verification option in some regions, using on-device and Private Cloud Compute age-estimation models. Apple says the selfie is deleted immediately after confirmation and is not accessible to Apple.
According to an Apple support document cited by 9to5Mac, users in some states, countries or regions may be asked to confirm they are an adult before taking certain actions on their Apple Account. One way to do so is to take a selfie, after which an age-estimation model evaluates images of the user’s face. The report said such requirements may apply to users in Australia, Brazil, Singapore, South Korea, the UK and Texas in the United States, and may cover scenarios including creating an Apple Account, updating software, downloading apps or changing select settings.
The selfie option is not available in all regions. Apple said that if a user is asked to confirm they are an adult, they might see the option to use a selfie. In that case, the user chooses the selfie option and taps Get Started, holds the device in front of them and centers their face in the frame. The user then captures all four angles of the face by moving the head slowly right, left, up and down while following onscreen guidance. Apple said estimating the user’s age might take a moment.
Apple said its age-estimation models run both on-device and on Private Cloud Compute to protect privacy. According to the support document, the selfie is not accessible to anyone, not even Apple, and is deleted immediately after the user’s age has been confirmed. Apple said the selfie is not retained in any form after confirmation.
