OpenAI Korea says nothing new to announce on possible Samsung chip collaboration

OpenAI Korea denies new Samsung chip collaboration, saying earlier remarks referred to an existing partnership.

"Our reference to expanding collaboration with Samsung was made in the context of Samsung Electronics' decision to introduce ChatGPT and a letter of intent announced last October," OpenAI Korea said. "We have not announced any plans on developing chips through Samsung."

The statement followed media reports on Wednesday that OpenAI is deepening cooperation with Samsung as the ChatGPT maker develops its own chips. The reports quoted Kim Kyung-hoon, general manager of OpenAI Korea, from a press conference held the same day. According to the reports, Kim said one of the areas where OpenAI has made the most progress and gained the most recognition with Samsung Electronics is its "joint production and research on the next-generation chips we are developing."

The reported comments came after OpenAI unveiled a custom artificial intelligence chip co-designed with Broadcom in June, called Jalapeno. The 2025 OpenAI-Samsung letter of intent touches on the supply of advanced semiconductor solutions for OpenAI's Stargate initiative, a project aimed at building giant AI data centers across the United States.

OpenAI Korea did not announce any new chip development plan with Samsung. It said its reference to expanding collaboration was tied to Samsung Electronics' decision to introduce ChatGPT and the letter of intent announced last October.
